Hey loves, within the last few years I've really zoned in on becoming a healthier person.
In high school, as a competitive dancer, I was always active and ate whatever I wanted to. When I began college, my activity slowed wayyy down and my eating / drinking habits weren't the best ( dining court cookies at every meal because they were so good, ya know? ). About a year or two into college, I started making tiny changes in my life; not only to improve my appearance, but also my health.
I am by no means a health and fitness expert. I definitely have room for improvement. BUT that's okay, because I think it's important to live a realistic lifestyle. I mean, what's life without Chick-fil-a?!
These small day-to-day changes are now habits that I live by. Ya know, my little 'tips & tricks' for leading a healthier and happier life.
This is what WORKS for me :
1. Water Water Water
This is huge. Water is KEY. I notice I feel more energetic and can avoid headaches when I'm hydrated. I do my best to make sure I get at least eight cups of water in my body per day. Drink up!!
Even when eating really well, it's still easy to miss nutrients that are so helpful to the body.
I used to take a women's daily gummy vitamins ( ya know, the ones you see at the grocery store ) but they're filled with sugar, so I switched to Ritual vitamins. Ritual has 9 beneficial ingredients for women, including Vitamin D3, B12, Iron, Omega-3 and Magnesium. Actually, I am so obsessed with the benefits of Magnesium ( increases energy, calms nerves, treats insomnia, prevents migraine headaches, etc. etc. ) that I prioritize my Magnesium pills every day over anything else. I genuinely feel better and notice a difference when I take them.
Oh & can't forget that I love taking a good probiotic, too. I definitely recommend Renew Life Women's Care.
These are the things that work for me. What works for me might not work for you. And always, if you ever have any questions about what you should put into your body, ask your doctor.
3. Instead of thinking about what I want to eat, think about what I should eat
I ask myself, "What is my body missing? Protein, greens, fruits, fiber?" and I try to give my body what is needs rather than what I'm craving.
Obviously, this is much easier said than done. BUT I make a conscious effort, whenever I get hungry, to think about what my body might be missing.
Eat to fuel your body, not just fill it.
4. Eat whatever I want... but don't go crazy
I've noticed that if tell myself I can't have something, then I want it that much more. Anyone else ??
So I eat whatever I want, whenever I want, BUT moderation is my best friend. I tend to focus on healthy foods and do things to better my body most of the time, but if I'm craving something, it's okay to give in and have it. This way I never feel like I'm depriving myself.
Life is beautiful and we are all meant to enjoy a donut every now and again or McDonald's french fries or boneless buffalo chicken wings or Ben & Jerry's Half Baked ice cream... you get my point.
When I indulge, I'll eat one dessert, not two. I'll eat half the meal, not the whole thing. I'll get a small instead of a large, etc. etc. Moderation is MAJOR.
When I'm asked about my number one fitness tip I say, and will always say, portion control. This goes for all food and especially the 'not so healthy' foods.
5. Exercise regularly
I noticed that I don't need to workout every single day, but I do have to move my body and sweat, regularly. The more I can workout, the better; but a really amazing workout, even just twice a week, is enough for my body to feel strong.
I recommend finding a workout that you love and make time to fit it into your schedule at least 2-3 times a week. I did that with a Barre class while I was at Purdue and I've never felt happier / stronger during my workouts. Now, I love to do power walking / running intervals a few times a week, as well as yoga or other programs I'm finding online!
Find something you love and make time for it.
Living a healthy life and taking care of my body is important to me, but I found that I'm happiest when I love my body... no matter what! I try to be the best version of myself, but I don't beat myself up when I'm not.
If there is one thing I want you to take away from this post, it's that you should love yourself. Nothing will make you happier than that.
